Preparat[―laː―][German Präparat]
In the summer of 2004, Lab. Preparat was launched as an independent entity to organize exhibitions and symposia. ‘Preparat,’ a sample for microscopy is an experiment observing active cell division of onion skin. A preparat, as a representative form of microscopy, we, the Lab. Preparat reached consensus that we should observe dynamic art works with (close attention)/attentively, as if we are examining some genuine cell activities
Created with the principle, Lab. Preparat carries out a variety of annual projects such as <404 Object Not Found>, dealing media art’s data Archiving, preservation and presentation. Moreover
With people interested in media art, Lab. Preparat runs Media Art Study (MAS) to build up concrete accumulation of media art theories. Such an act serves as a core value of our organization, seeking vigorous visual art activities both at national as well as international level.
Today, the realm of media art is not merely restricted to visual art. It is a crucial medium that can welcome and embrace other art areas where many different human senses are involved. Through diverse aspects of media art, Lab. Preparat seeks significant interactions with art as well as society where we belong to.
Among many other activities, Lab. Preparat takes the ‘particular/individual relationship’ between viewers and artist-curator groups as the top priority. Such a link is footed on art, however, it can be extended to the society at large, translated into common language that can convey the story of the art works. Putting the particular/individual interaction as the highest notch, we pay special attention on artists-curators relationship, sharing stories nonstop, and further, wish it to be served as a friendly art work’s guide to the audience.
We, Lab. Preparat believe in the power of artistic relationship. We also hold belief that such a relationship can make change through social interaction. Art has a special power for change, or at least it has some distinctive feature of influence. Even right at the moment, people at Lab. Preparat translate and interpret the unique visual language of art works through continuous discourse with artists.
Ultimately, through diverse activities as exhibitions, symposia, and projects, Lab. Preparat yearns to relate with society and to provide a forum where people can exchange ideas on visual language/media art. Moreover, Lab. Preparat seeks to have a bias-breaking attitude, embracing all nationalities, skin color, religion, and gender, exploring their own artistic narrative. Through its ongoing presentation of exhibitions, symposia, and projects with a newer vision, Lab. Preparat will continue to address and share each individual art works’ dynamics with close observation/attention.

: 깨어 있는 젊은 시각으로 전시와 심포지움, 프로젝트를 이끌어 나가는 콜렉티브 그룹
프레파라트[―라ː―][독일어 Präparat] <명사> ≪생물학≫ 현미경으로 관찰하는 표본.
프레파라트 연구소는 2004년 여름, 전시와 심포지움을 기획하는 독립 기획 집단으로 출발하였습니다. 현미경 표본을 상징하기도 하는 프레파라트는 현미경의 재물대 위에 양파 껍질 프레파라트를 올려놓고는 활발한 세포분열을 관찰하던 실험을 부르는 말입니다. 현미경을 사용하는 실험의 대명사인 프레파라트를 통해서 우리는 세포 분열과 같은 생동하는 예술 활동을 관찰해야 하며, 그것을 현미경으로 자세히 살펴볼 필요가 있다고 의견을 모았습니다.
이렇게 태어난 프레파라트 연구소는 현재 미디어 아트의 데이터 보존에 관한 이슈를 다루는 <404 Object not Found>와 사회 참여적 미디어 작업의 국제적 교환 스크리닝을 통해서 각 나라간의 사회 참여적 작업의 동향을 살펴보는 <Coffee with Sugar>와 같은 프로젝트들을 연례 프로젝트로 진행하고 있습니다. 또한 미디어 아트에 관심이 많은 분들과 미디어 아트 이론에 관한 구체적 지식의 구축을 꾀하는 미디어 아트 스터디 MAS를 진행하고 있습니다. 이러한 미디어 아트에 관한 활동은 대한민국 안에서뿐만 아니라 국제적인 교류활동을 통하여 시각 예술의 활성화를 지향하는 프레파라트 연구소의 근본적 개념의 중심을 이루는 활동입니다. 현재 미디어 아트의 영역은 시각 예술에만 국한되는 것이 아니라 다른 감각 기관들을 이용하는 예술 세계까지도 포용할 수 있는 중요한 매체입니다. 미디어 아트의 이러한 다방면 활동을 통하여 예술뿐만 아니라 우리가 속해 있는 세계와의 뜻있는 쌍방향 소통을 지향 합니다.
프레파라트 연구소에서 무엇보다도 중요하게 생각하는 활동은 ‘구체적 소통’을 전제로 하는 아티스트와 큐레이터, 그리고 관객과의 관계입니다. 이 관계는 예술에 그 뿌리를 두고 있으나 사회 전반에 걸쳐 모든 부분으로 예술의 향기를 전파할 수 있는 보편적 언어로 재구성됩니다. 그리하여 프레파라트 연구소는 아티스트와 큐레이터 사이의 끊임없는 이야기와 서로 간의 숙제를 통한 아주 구체적인 소통을 원하며, 이러한 소통이 관객에게 친절한 작품 가이드가 되기를 희망합니다. 이러한 예술적 관계도는 사회적 소통 방식에도 영향을 미칠 수 있다고 믿습니다. 예술은 사회를 움직이거나 적어도 영향력을 행사할 수 있는 아주 특별한 힘이 있기 때문입니다. 현재 프레파라트 연구소의 연구원들은 끊임없이 아티스트들의 이야기를 들으며, 각 작가의 고유한 시각 언어를 해독해 내고 있습니다.
그러므로 프레파라트 연구소의 지향점은 전시와 심포지움, 프로젝트라는 형태를 통해서 사회와 소통하고자 하는 의지를 드러내고, 시각 언어의 담론을 형성할 수 있는 원탁 테이블 을 조성하는 것입니다. 더불어 국적이나 피부색, 종교나 성별과 같은 차이를 넘어서 예술 언어에 깊은 사려로써 귀 기울일 수 있는 큐레이터쉽을 가지고자 합니다. 깨어 있는 젊은 시각으로 전시와 심포지움, 프로젝트를 이끌어 나가겠습니다. 현미경을 통해서 분열하는 예술 세포들의 움직임 하나하나를 보고하겠습니다. 프레파라트 연구소는 이러한 성과를 창출하는 깨어있는 젊은 시각의 집단지능 그룹입니다.
